An ancient portrait of Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf, the most senior muezzin of the time at Haram Mukki is released by Hermain Administration. In the picture, Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf is seen giving azan in the Haram. Sheikh Muhammad's father was also a muezzin of Haram Mukki. Sheikh Muhammad was born in Al-Jayad area of Makkah. He was educated at Al-Mansuriyah School in Makkah. Before assuming the duties of muezzin in the Haram, he took up the profession of Zamazma, an ancient tradition of the people of Makkah. I have already made a short video on Zamzama which you can watch by clicking on the above given link. Muezzin of Haram Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf started performing Azan duties in Haram Sharif on behalf of his father when he was 23 years old. From that time till today, Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf has been performing the duties of giving Azan in the Haram. Before the arrival of loudspeakers, 4 muezzins used to give azan in Haram Miki Al-Sharif at the same time. A minaret or mausoleum would be reserved for the muezzin, where they used to call for Prayers. This series ended with the arrival of loudspeakers. It should be noted that there are a large number of muezzins in Haram-e-Mukki and Masjid-e-Nabawi-e-Sharif. The number of basic muezzins in Haram Mukki is currently 24. All the muezzins are appointed by the Institute of Harmain Affairs to give Adhan at different times.
