Glenn Gould plays the twelve-tone piece Variations for Piano (Op. 27) by Anton Webern. From "Anthology of Variation" [CBC].

Originally broadcast on June 3, 1966.

"It would be false to suggest that [Webern's art] is purely a cerebral craft. The gratification of the intellect and of the senses is inseparable in art. However, any physical response or sensual stimulation has been elevated to so subliminal a state, that it is very difficult to relate Anton Webern's music to the world as we know it. But on the rare occasions in art, when we find revealed a visionary region of such paradisiacal enchantment, it is the happier diversion not to try." (Glenn Gould, 1953)
