Birju Maharaj, the pinnacle of Indian classical dance Kathak, is no more. He was 83 years old. It is his invaluable contribution in the field of art that today artists from all over the country are writing with moist eyes that the rhythm of Indian music has stopped, the notes have become silent and the expressions have become zero. Dancer and classical singer Birju Maharaj also choreographed dance in many films. The heights that he touched in the field of art, his home used to be influx of people who were to learn, understand and take guidance from him. Delhi Wala Ghar D-II/33, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi. This was the address of Birju Maharaj for many decades. The elder babu of the Government of India has usually lived on Shahjahan Road. The Kathak emperor Pandit Birju Maharaj also lived here. Here he was allotted a flat by the government. This flat has three bedrooms with three drawing-dining rooms. There is a small garden next to the ground floor flat. Birju Maharaj would tell that the government had allotted this house to him for his outstanding contribution to the world of art. Year after year and decades passed. He loved this house like the one in Lucknow. He would say, Delhi is a wonderful city... now does not feel like going back from here.

भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्य कथक के शिखर पुरुष बिरजू महाराज नहीं रहे। वह 83 साल के थे। कला के क्षेत्र में उनका अमूल्य योगदान ही है कि आज देशभर के कलाकार नम आंखों से लिख रहे हैं कि भारतीय संगीत की लय थम गई, सुर मौन हो गए और भाव शून्य हो गए। नर्तक और शास्त्रीय गायक बिरजू महाराज ने कई फिल्मों में भी डांस की कोरियोग्राफी की थी। कला के क्षेत्र में उन्होंने जिस ऊंचाई को छुआ, उनसे सीखने-समझने, मार्गदर्शन लेने वालों का उनके घर तांता लगा रहता था। दिल्ली वाला घर डी-II/33, शाहजहां रोड, नई दिल्ली। कई दशकों से बिरजू महाराज का यही पता था। शाहजहां रोड पर आमतौर पर भारत सरकार के बड़े बाबू रहते आए हैं। यहीं कथक सम्राट पंडित बिरजू महाराज भी रहते थे। यहां उन्हें सरकार ने फ्लैट आवंटित किया था। इस फ्लैट में तीन ड्रॉइंग-डायनिंग रूम के साथ तीन बेड रूम हैं। ग्राउंड फ्लोर के फ्लैट के आगे एक छोटा सा बगीचा है। बिरजू महाराज बताते कि सरकार ने यह घर उन्हें कला की दुनिया में उत्कृष्ट योगदान के चलते आवंटित किया था। साल दर साल और दशक बीतते गए। उन्हें इस घर से लखनऊ वाले घर की तरह ही प्यार था। वह कहते, दिल्ली गजब का शहर है...अब यहां से वापस जाने का मन नहीं करता।
