दक्षिण भारत में आज पोंगल का त्योहार मनाया जा रहा है, यह पर्व कृषि से संबंधित है। दक्षिण भारत में यह पर्व 4 दिनों तक धूमधाम से मनाया जाता हैं, मकर संक्रांति के दिन से ही यह पर्व शुरु हो जाता है। इस दिन ही गन्ना और धान की फसल पककर फसल तैयार होती हैं। फसल को तैयार देखकर किसान खुश होकर इंद्र देव, सूर्य देव और गाय, बैल की पूजा करते हैं। पोंगल त्योहार का नाम औपचारिक पोंगल से लिया गया है, जिसका मतलब है उबालना या ओवरफ्लो होना।
