Heavy rain in northeastern Brazil bursts dams and forces thousands to flee over Christmas holiday

The city of Itabuna, in Brazil’s Bahia state, is under water after two dams collapsed following months of heavy rains. The two dams broke on December 25 and 26, causing thousands to evacuate the city. The rains have caused 18 deaths and more than 280 injuries across the northeastern state in recent weeks.
