A growing number of U.S. colleges and universities moved final exams online, Apple shut down some of its stores temporarily and major North American sports leagues scrambled to control outbreaks as cases climb and the threat from the new Omicron coronavirus variant grows. 

Meanwhile, health officials elsewhere in the world were saying Omicron was a serious threat and advised against international travel.
