Major Taiwan reef at risk of being developed into gas terminal

Taiwan’s Datan algal reef, one of the world’s largest shallow sea biotic reefs, is under threat of being developed into a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal. At most terminals, ships can berth their tankers, store LNG in cryogenic tanks, regasify LNG or send out gas into the transmission grid. The self-ruled island is due to hold a referendum on December 18, 2021 for voters to decide whether the terminal should be built.
