Thousands of rugby fans crowded into pubs and rugby clubs across Kent hoping one of their own would guide England to victory in the World Cup final.

Piers Francis was born in Gravesend and was part of the 31-man squad that went to Japan.

Unfortunately, the Lions were neutralised by South Africa who ran out 32-12 winners in the final.
