China’s Climate Deal With The U.S.
A joint declaration between the United States and China states the 2 superpowers will work together on a series of climate-related actions. The Wednesday announcement during the COP36 climate change summit in Glasgow, Scotland has taken the world by surprise. The declaration covers a number of issues, including cutting carbon dioxide and methane emissions and tackling illegal deforestation. The declaration states both countries are “intent on seizing this critical moment to engage in expanded individual and combined efforts to accelerate the transition to a global net-zero economy.” It also expresses the intention to establish a working group to meet and regularly address the climate crisis with concrete actions in this decade. Many world leaders responded with a nod to the Paris agreement, which seeks to hold global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The United Nations has also noted that 1.5 degrees Celsius is considered to be the upper limit when it comes to avoiding the worst consequences of climate change.
