African Hippopotamus, the River Horse

HIPPO

The hippopotamus is a large mammal that lives in eastern Africa. He spends much of his time in rivers, lakes and swamps. Its scientific name is Hippopotamus amphibius and, like the pig, it has four-toed legs with a hoof.

Hippos have barrel-shaped bodies, measure about 3.5 meters in length and weigh more than 3,200 kilograms. Its skin is quite thick, grayish-brown in color and almost hairless. In sunlight, the oily substance produced by your skin gives it a reddish tinge. Scientists believe this substance works as a sunscreen.

They spend the day resting in shallow water and often sleep leaving only their eyes, ears and muzzle above the surface. They are able to dive and walk on the bottom of rivers and lakes, without breathing for 5 to 10 minutes. At night they go ashore and eat grass.

The hippos live in water and, in its vicinity, has its name originated by the Greeks as: Hippopotamus amphibius, which means “river horse”.

The pygmy hippopotamus is a close relative of the hippopotamus. Very rare, it lives on a small tract of land in West Africa. Much smaller than their relatives, the largest pygmy hippos weigh no more than 270 kilograms, and tend to spend less time in the water.
