Agriculture and the Responsive, Responsible State- Rajeswari S. Raina
  • 2 years ago
Agriculture and the Responsive, Responsible State in English language is part of the Reimagining India Public Video Lecture Series.

Rajeswari S Raina is a Professor, Department of International Relations and Governance Studies, Shiv Nadar University.

Prof. Raina discusses the state of Indian agriculture and the problems of the industrialized development of agriculture. She discusses the role of the middle class in butchering agriculture through the endorsement of destructive development policies responsible for downgrading agriculture and increasing nutrient-deficient crop productions. Centralization and consolidation of agricultural policies have suffocated the sector by centralizing food production, disrupting food culture diversity due to the green revolution. Prof. Raina advocates a decentralized food production system by adopting localized crop production, encouraging diverse consumption patterns. Orissa Millet Mission is one such success that revived local food production and culture, demonstrating a range of possible local technology choices. She reimagines agriculture with a different worldview than mere producers and building localized food production systems based on diverse and democratic knowledge.

‘Reimagining India’ hopes to start a conversation to explore the contours of a society that is more just, equal and aligned to the Constitutional values of liberty and fraternity. Over the next two months, beginning from Oct 2, 2021 , 50 lectures on relevant themes by leading public intellectuals and political leaders will provide an alternate vision for the country.
