Imagining India: Undoing Untouchability in English language is part of the Reimagining India Video Lecture Series.

Paul Diwakar Namala is Convener, Asia Dalit Rights Forum

Despite various constitutional safeguards the Constitution provides, rampant casteism continues to persist, manifesting itself into economic and socio-cultural deprivation. Mr. Diwakar points out the structural and institutional discrimination against the marginalized communities through economic, political, and societal exclusion despite their immense indirect contribution to the tax revenues. He addresses the expansion of the social exclusion and hierarchy from Hindutva ideology to other religions. He furthermore talks about the continual practice of discrimination in the educational and health sphere and, at the same time, the adverse impact of covid on their overall well-being. Mr. Diwakar offers various solutions: formulating social equity policy that ensures inclusivity and accessibility to the market, addressing the internalized inferiority and supremacy among communities to undo casteism and untouchability.

‘Reimagining India’ hopes to start a conversation to explore the contours of a society that is more just, equal and aligned to the Constitutional values of liberty and fraternity. Over the next two months, beginning from Oct 2, 2021 , 50 lectures on relevant themes by leading public intellectuals and political leaders will provide an alternate vision for the country.
