Overview of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Jaisalmer is the largest district of Rajasthan and also one of the largest in the country. It is located 575km west from Jaipur. The town contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples and it stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort. The symbolic sculptured houses and temples can be seen in the whole town. Its population is nearly 78,000 and it is situated in the heart of the Thar Desert. The Headquarter of the town is Jaisalmer District. The name of the town comes from the name of its founder, Raja Jaisal who was a Rajput King. "Jaisalmer" means "the Hill Fort of Jaisal". The yellow sand gives the city and the surrounding area a yellowish golden glow hence Jaisalmer is also known as "The Golden City of India"


Jaisalmer has a rich culture export of musicians and dancers to the rest of the world.

Jaisalmer is also known for its leather "messenger bags", which are made from wild camels native in the area. Jaisalmer is the last station of a Broad gauge branch railway of Indian Railways, which joins with the main system at Jodhpur. The Palace on Wheels has a scheduled stop at Jaisalmer. Jaisalmer is well connected by road and many flights are also available during the Desert Festival held between the months of January and february.Many sleeper and sitting buses ply between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, Jaipur, Barmer, Bikaner throughout the year.
