Lava flowing from the Canary Islands' first volcanic eruption in 50 years has forced the evacuation of 5,500 people, destroyed at least 100 houses, and was expected to trigger toxic gases when it reaches the sea in the evening.

She said there were no restrictions on travel to the Islands. But her comments have been criticized by an opposition party in light of the damage done.

More than 5000 people have been evacuated and about 100 homes destroyed in La Palma, according to authorities. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited affected areas on Monday.
