Because the whole environment started becoming toxic, no one was able to get rid of this poison, then Lord Shankar stopped the poison in his throat for the welfare of the people. This is the reason why Lord Shankar Ji was also known as Neelkanth Mahadev. It is said that Lord Shankar got very distraught due to stopping the poison in the throat, to end his distraction, his distraction did not end even after the gods left a stream of cold water on him, then Chandra Dev himself scared him. दिनाँक 16 अगस्त 2021,सोमवार,को श्रावण मास का चौथा अंतिम सोमवार अति महत्वपूर्ण है, क्योंकि इस दिन अष्टमी तिथि(व्रत का पूर्ण फल दिलाने वाली ),अनुराधा नक्षत्र(शुभ फल देने वाला),सूर्य की सिंह संक्रांति का विशेष संयोग है।सिध्दियां प्राप्त करने की दृष्टि से यह दिन अति महत्वपूर्ण है। श्रावण माह को बहुत ही पवित्र माना जाता है, इस माह के सोमवार का विशेष महत्व है।ऐसा माना जाता है, समुद्र मंथन के समय भी श्रावण माह था,समुद्र से निकलने वाले भयंकर विष "कालकूट" के कारण संपूर्ण वातावरण विषैला होने लगा,कोई भी इस विष से मुक्ति नही दिला पा रहा था, तब भगवान शंकर ने लोगों के कल्याण के लिए विष अपने कंठ में रोक लिया।यही कारण है कि भगवान शंकर जी को नीलकंठ महादेव के नाम से भी जाना जाता है, कंठ में विष रोकने के कारण भगवान शंकर अति व्याकुलता में आ गए, उनकी व्याकुलता को समाप्त करने के लिए देवताओं द्वारा उन पर शीतल जल की धारा छोड़ने पर भी उनकी व्याकुलता समाप्त नहीं हुई,तब चंद्र देव ने स्वयं को डरते डरते उनके मस्तक पर धारण करने का निवेदन किया।
