Rashid Irani, Film Critic Dies At 74, Karan Johar Pays Tribute; Kalyani Menon, Popular Singer Dies At 80

Film critic Rashid Irani was found dead on August 2 at his residence. 74-year-old Irani, who had multiple health issues also lived alone. He reportedly breathed his last on July 30 at his home in the South Mumbai neighbourhood of Dhobitalao, according to his close friend Rafeeq Ellias, reported PTI. The official social media account of the Mumbai Press Club also tweeted about Irani’s demise. Rashid Irani, who had contributed several articles in national dailies like Times of India, Hindustan Times and Scroll.in, was “one of the pillars of the Mumbai Press Club Film Society”, the club said in the statement. Filmmakers like Karan Johar and Sudhir Mishra also paid rich tributes to the late critic. Popular playback singer Kalyani Menon also passed away on August 2 at a private hospital in Chennai. She died due to age-related illness, reported PTI. 80-year-old Kalyani was the mother of noted director and founder of Mindscreen Film Institute, Rajiv Menon. She developed symptoms of stroke and was immediately rushed to the hospital where she breathed her last. Kalyani Menon began her career as a classical singer in the 1970s.
