Sir Richard Branson rockets to the edge of space

Billionaire Sir Richard Branson has taken a giant leap for the space tourism industry.

The Virgin Galactic founder reached the edge of space more than 80 kilometres from the Earth's surface.

Weather conditions temporarily paused the historic flight before Virgin Galactic became the first privately owned company to launch its owner and founder into the atmosphere.

Sir Branson admitted he had been dreaming of the journey since the 1969 moon landing.

He narrowly beat Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos in the space race - who has planned his own trip for July 20.
