South Carolina Gubernatorial Race Heats Up
  • 3 years ago
The Palmetto state was the scene of some hotly contested races in 2020, but what lies in store in 2022? Experts say- expect more of the same. We speak with Senator Mia McLeod, one of the Democratic candidates for Governor. Matt Klink, GOP strategist lays out the ingrained advantages the GOP enjoy in South Carolina and explains the challenges that lie ahead for Democrats. In 2020, South Carolina voters saw high profile, Democratic candidates on the ballot, hitting the headlines and raising record-breaking sums of money. Despite this, Republicans still won big in the state. Will the 2022 mid-terms be any different? Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Mia McLeod, the first black woman to run for this office, seems to think so. SOT Mia McLeod we've got a a new candidate and I'm running for governor because I believe I have the ability to connect with all south Carolinians and to represent all south Carolinians. Despite this historical candidacy, Governor Henry McMaster has been in office since 2017 and will be difficult to beat. SOT MATT KLINK Former Congressman Joe Cunningham has also thrown his hat into the ring. Cunningham presents himself as a moderate to conservative Democrat. Mcleod is a more liberal voice who has won competitive races in the state legislator. She says that she is committed to levelling up economic opportunities in the state. SOT MIA MCLEOD I mean, we have so many people who are hurting right now and when you have people who are making more on unemployment than they are able to make on their jobs, that's the problem. And that's those, those kinds of things, those are the kinds of things that we have to change. Uh and we're not going to be able to do that obviously under our current governor. The GOP has historically been dominant in the state; something current Governor McMaster will be betting on in his reelection. SOT MATT KLINK One thing is for sure, with a Senate and Gubernatorial seat up for grabs the Palmetto state will be an exciting state to watch in the 2022 midterms.
