People have been urged to display a white flag at their house to signal to others that they have run out of food and in need of immediate assistance.

Meanwhile, Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin appeared to have joined the bandwagon.

On Twitter, she wrote that she was with the #benderaputih campaign to identify those in need of help.

Netizens were quick to criticise her for allegedly hijacking the campaign.
