In the narrow alleys and windowless stilt houses of the Vila Gilda favela in Santos, southeast Brazil, good sanitary conditions are hard to come by. The Covid-19 pandemic is just one more item on a long list of problems for the 26,000 residents who face the constant risk of fire, falling between the wooden planks, and other diseases.
