Pharrell Williams Announces Plan to Open
Private Schools for Low-Income Families.
Williams is taking action to help
families in his home state, Virginia. .
The musician revealed to ‘The Virginian-Pilot’ that
he plans to open a number of private schools specifically
for low-income families. .
The schools will address the “fixed and unfair”
education system by offering
“future-forward education” to students.
We don’t want lockstep learning where
so many kids fall behind; we want bespoke
learning designed for each child, where
the things that make a child different are
the same things that will make a child
rise up and take flight, Pharrell Williams, to ‘The Virginian-Pilot’.
The first school, Yellowhab, will open to
elementary-aged students in the fall of 2021. .
[Yellowhab will offer] an immersive
educational environment that sparks
imagination in a story-filled space
where children transcend the [every day]
on a journey for deeper learning, Yellowhab, via website.
40 to 50 students in grades 3 to 5 will be offered
a spot at Yellowhab via a lottery system. .
Applicants will be selected based on need, including
family income requirements and being qualified for
the Federal Free and Reduced-Price Lunch program.
The price of attendance for all students will be
free for at least the first year, with costs covered
by philanthropic support
