Achieving another feat, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) became the first hospital in Odisha to implant a micro leadless pacemaker in the heart of a patient on Thursday (January 21).

The leadless pacemaker is a miniaturised heart device which is inserted directly into the heart. Unlike regular pacemakers, it is implanted just below the skin on the chest. The device was implanted into a patient, in whose case a conventional pacemaker was not appropriate due to arrhythmia.

The surgery was performed by cardiologist and electro-physiologist doctor Debashis Acharya and doctor Debashis Dash.

Generally, the implantation of a leadless pacemaker costs around Rs 10 lakh to 12 lakh. But the hospital has carried out the implantation at a concessional rate.
