The death toll in the deadly gas leak at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has shot up to 4. Two more persons engaged in the company succumbed after inhaling toxic fumes that leaked at the Coal Chemical Department of the plant today. All the four deceased were reportedly contractual employees.
Around 15 employees were on duty at the site when the incident took place. While ten of them fell ill following the leakage of toxic gas from the plant and were initially admitted to the dispensary on the plant premises, 4 of them were shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) after their condition deteriorated.
Two of these employees were declared brought dead, while two more succumbed during treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.
Apart from this, six more employees have been discharged from the plant dispensary after preliminary treatment. However, the RSP authorities are yet to confirm the deaths and disclose the identity of the affected employees.
The plant authorities have reportedly constituted a panel to investigate the circumstances that led to the mishap. According to sources, the gas leaked at the coal chemical site of the plant following the sudden burst of the safety valve.
