In a land where it was difficult to even grow a blade of grass, one can now see the rich greenery of an irrigated field. Barhampura Village under Rairakhol of Sambalpur district was grappling with water shortage once, but is now abundantly irrigated. So how did it happen?

This transition was possible due to the dedicated efforts of the villagers of Barhamapura. But it was no mean feat. These villagers have successfully diverted the water from a waterfall at least 3 km away to breathe life into these once barren agricultural fields and parched homes.

The waterfall is in Sankhapatia Forest and has now become the main source of water for these villagers. With financial assistance from NABARD for this diversion project, these villagers have not only constructed a water tank but also laid pipelines for transportation of water to each and every household in the village. Now they have 24/7 access to water for drinking, washing laundry, cooking and for agricultural purposes. This too has been made possible, without electricity.

What is interesting is that all this happened in just over a month and during the COVID19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the village management committee is holding monthly meetings to supervise and facilitate maintenance of the project.
