"CAA is Central Issue in Assam Elections,Local Economy Decimated byUnemployment and Price Increases"

Campaigning is at fever pitch in Assam, which will go to polls soon. It’s a state where the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA ) has emerged as a distinct electoral agenda. In conversation with Mitali Mukherjee, Gaurav Gogoi said the INC’s ‘Axom Basaon Ahok’ (Come, Let’s Save Assam) yatras that began from Bordowa Thaan are an attempt to reach out to the people of Assam on crucial issues of CAA and economic strife.
He emphasised that the Congress is against CAA and will not implement it , if voted to power. Gogoi said The Assam Accord will be the benchmark and operative principle for the Congress.

The regional sentiment in Assam politics has always been issue-based. AGP was formed in 1985 to fight the foreigner issue and new parties including the Assam Jatiya Parishad are being created to reflect regional aspirations on the issue of the CAA. Gogoi said the “grand alliance” that has been formed with Congress, AIUDF, CPI, CPI (M), CPI (ML) and Anchalik Gana Morcha reflects a clear anti CAA stance, while the ruling BJP-AGP combine is pro-CAA.
He also lined out that the economic agenda for the Congress would include 'One Family, One Job'' i.e. providing at least one job per family ( As per Assam Employment Exchange Office, Assam has over 20 Lakh (20,47,195) registered unemployed youth as on December 31, 2019), waiver of farm debts and providing microfinance loans for women.

A contentious economic issue is the income of Assam's tea garden workers. Gogoi said Assam's tea garden workers currently get ₹ 167 per day wage. The Congress has promised to give tea garden workers of Assam ₹ 365 per day wage while also working at scaling the tea business in the state.
