"Don't Want Confrontation With Government, We Want Solutions," Say Farmers Before Bharat Band
  • 3 years ago
At the Ghazipur border, dividing Delhi and UP, thousands of farmers have been gathered in protest against the three farm laws since November 26. Over ten days have passed since but the talks between the government and the farmers have not made any headway.

The farmers gave a call for a nationwide ‘Bharat Bandh’ on 8th December. They say they were ‘forced to declare this bandh’ due to the Modi government’s refusal to listen to them.

Several organisations, collectives, unions and political parties extended support to the bandh. While farmers welcomed the political parties’ support they also questioned the timing and motives. “We will not allow any political party to extract gains from our protest”, emphasise the protestors.

Calling the Bharat Bandh ‘a lesson that this government better learn from’, farmers believe that the numerous blockades and protests
have had an effect. The government is now being forced to at least have conversations with farmers, something which they didn’t do while formulating the farm laws.

There is also anger at the portrayal of the protesting farmers. “If someone questions, he/she is made into a terrorist”, rues one protestor. The anger is especially directed towards those who have been terming them as ‘Khalistani terrorists’ and ‘paid’ protestors.

Farmers have reiterated that they will not back down until they get the government to fulfil their demands, even if it takes months.
