Why is Iran Mourning General Soleimani's Death? | The Wire

Solemani became a folk hero back in Iran after he became the public face of Iran’s intervention in Syria against the Islamic State from 2013. He amassed a large social media following, appearing in memes, documentaries, music videos, and an animated film. In 2016, there were rumours that Soleimani was run for President. Denying them, he described himself as a “soldier of the Velayat, the Islamic establishment and my stout-hearted and beloved nation by the end of my life.” The Supreme Leader and The President of Iran have vowed, “severe revenge” for the killing of General Soleimani.
