The US government on May 1 announced a ban on entry of non-citizens or non-residents if they have been to India in the past 14 days on account of rising Covid-19 cases. This will be effective 12.01 am eastern daylight time on May 4. India's active caseload passed the 34 lakh-mark with 3,68,147 fresh infections added in the last 24 hours, six per cent lower than May 2 spike. Over 3,417 Covid-19 linked deaths have been reported, taking total deaths to 2,18,959. In a statement, the White House said that the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised, based on work by public health & scientific experts, that variants of coronavirus that are prevalent in India “have characteristics of concern, which may make them more easily transmitted and have the potential for reduced protection afforded by some vaccines.”
