Passages: Sulu, Kalis

This week’s episode of Gabriel Malvar’s Passages: Sulu features the kalis.

The kalis is part of the moro identity. It was an important measure of a man’s stature and ascendancy. Carrying a kalis was regarded with distinction. Regarded as the most prestigious type of sword, the kalis passed from father to son. An heirloom of honor. The exchange of blades between families also sealed matrimonial unions.
