His dedication to the Queen was unmatched, but Prince Philip's qualities as a father and family man were sometimes less obvious. From the birth of the couple's first child Prince Charles in 1948, the Duke of Edinburgh earned the reputation for being a strict disciplinarian. But in later years he developed a strong bond with his children and proved to be a pillar of strength following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
