Alice Coachman is the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal and specialized in high jump. Growing up in the Jim Crow era, she was denied access to regular training facilities. Coachman was had to train by running shoeless on dirt roads and creating her own equipment. She was the only American woman to medal in a sport during the 1948 summer games in London.
