After toiling on a slow and flat surface in the first Test, Indian spinners are likely to get more purchase in the second Test, starting on Saturday, as the pitch is expected to take turn as early as the first day. The key difference between the two surfaces is the nature of the soil. The pitch for the first Test comprised purely of red soil and it did not break until late in the match. However, the surface for the second Test will have a base comprising red soil and a top layer comprising black cotton soil. It is understood that if the conditions are dry, the top layer, primarily made of black clay, will start to disintegrate faster.

दूसरा टेस्ट मैच शुरू होने से पहले ही चेन्नई की पिच चर्चा का केंद्र बन गया है. चेन्नई की पिच को लेकर तमाम बातें कही जा रही है. रिपोर्ट्स के अनुसार कहा ये जा रहा है कि चेन्नई की पिच पिछले मैच की तुलना में इस बार कहीं ज्यादा टर्न लेगी. दूसरे और तीसरे दिन से ही गेंद घुमने लगेगी. और ऐसे में स्पिन गेंदबाजों का बोलबाला रहेगा. क्रिकइन्फो के अनुसार, इस पिच के बेस में लाल मिट्टी है, लेकिन ऊपर सतह काली मिट्टी की है. इस पिच पर पहले मैच के मुकाबले स्पिनरों के मुकाबले ज्यादा मदद मिल सकती है. इसका कारण है कि पिच से स्पिनरों को जल्दी मदद मिलेगी और गेंद ज्यादा टर्न लेगी. यह समझा जाता है कि यदि ड्राइ कंडीशन हों तो ऊपरी परत, जो मुख्य रूप से काली मिट्टी से बनी है, तेजी से टूटने लगेगी. स्टेडियम में तैयार की गई पांच पिच में से पहला टेस्ट दूसरे नंबर की पिच पर हुआ था. लेकिन अब दूसरा मैच पांचवें नंबर की पिच पर होने की संभावना है.
