Florida's 'Beer Can Island' Wants $500K to Save It from Washing Away

If you look in Tampa Bay between MacDill Air Force Base and Apollo Beach, you will see a small island. It's labeled Pine Key, but the locals have a different name for this small, sandy spit of land: Beer Can Island. It was once used as a dredgers' dumping ground, but it has been revitalized recently. The owners have added basic facilities like toilets and trash cans, and they now charge for camping. But they need to raise 500k to save these water-bound drinking grounds from erosion. The small island has reportedly shrunk more than two acres since being purchased two years ago.As of this writing, the owners have only raised a paltry $890 of their $500,000 goal on GoFundMe.Maybe locals would be happy to see it washed away, or maybe it's just tough to raise money for a private business.Perhaps a rebrand to something like Champagne Bottle Island would help bring in some more big-ticket donors?
