The stage is set in Washington, D.C., for Wednesday’s inauguration of the 46th president of the United States. Thousands of American flags are taking the place of people on the National Mall, and the recent political violence and COVID-19 pandemic mean this inauguration will be unlike any in American history.

About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals. As Jackson Proskow reports, there will be more troops than civilians in Washington's streets for the inauguration, and fear of more political violence is real.
