Rep. Ilhan Omar opens up about her refugee story and the "blessing and curse" of being a trailblazer

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, discusses her memoir, “This Is What America Looks Like: My Journey from Refugee to Congresswoman,” in which she shares new details about her journey from war-torn Somalia to a refugee coming to the United States at 12 years old.

Omar tells Salon’s Dean Obeidallah that she wrote the book, in part, to set the record straight on her story. “I think there is often a narrative about who I am and what I care about that people have developed in their head,” she said.
