For the first time, Amazon purchases 11 jets to ship orders faster.

On Tuesday, Amazon said it purchased 11 jets from Delta and WestJet airlines to boost its growing delivery network and get orders faster for shoppers.

It is the first time it has purchased aircraft for its delivery network, the company said. Amazon has been leasing planes to build its fleet over the past couple of years.

"Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations," Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air, said in a blog post.

Amazon, based in Seattle, has been working on delivering most of its packages itself and relying less on UPS, the U.S. The Postal Service and other transport companies.

In addition to its fleet of airplanes, Amazon has also constructed a number of airport package sizing hubs and opened warehouses where shoppers live.
