The Revolutionaries • Kunta Kinte • Featuring Steve McQueen’s ‘Lovers Rock’ • 1980

Party scenes from Steve McQueen’s new film, ‘Lovers Rock’, cut to the classic Channel One dub plate Kunta Kinte.

The Revolutionaries were the in-house session band for Joseph "Jo Jo" Hookim's Channel One label. Built around drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Ranchie Mc Lean - later replaced by Robbie Shakespeare.

Kunta Kinte started out as the 1978 Channel One song, Beware Of Your Enemies by Creole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAKHqNckJIk

For me the highlight of Steve McQueen’s new 5-part Small Axe film series, is ‘Lovers Rock’. The film is about two lovers who meet at a West London reggae house party in 1980.

Open letter to Steve McQueen:

Dear Steve,

It is with the greatest respect for your craft that I made this video.

I am a big fan of your movies, going back to Hunger in 2008. I loved every one of your new Small Axe films, especially Lovers Rock. It took me back to how much I loved dancing at Dub events in London in the late 80’s and early 90’s, to the likes of On-U Sounds and Jah Shaka. The Kunta Kinte party scene in Lovers Rock blew me away, and I felt very strongly that I wanted to refashion it into an online music video.

I sought to contact you about it first. However, you were not to be found, since apparently you don’t have a website, a Facebook or Twitter account.

So, here is your Lovers Rock movie recut as a music video. I do hope you are okay about it.

Cheers,
Nacho

For most of us, there haven’t been any parties recently. For my last video of this grim year, as The Guardian review of Lovers Rock puts it, ‘Steve McQueen throws the best party ever’.

In Lovers Rock, when Kunta Kinte is played at the party, the crowd go nuts. It gets two rewinds, and every time produces a euphoric reaction on the dancefloor. During the scene, the narrative also takes us out of the room, and into some of the little dramas and romances that are developing. But when all the Kunta Kinte dancefloor scenes were compiled, there was enough footage for me to edit together a video for the entire duration of the original tune.

Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!
