Monday, December 21 is a day of great events, as it marks the Winter Solstice. Also known as December solstice, hiemal solstice or hibernal solstice, the event takes place when one of the Earth’s pole is tilted away from the sun at its maximum distance. Apparently, this causes the day to have the shortest period of daylight due to being away from the sun, with the longest night of the year. This day is marked once every year on either December 21 or 22.

वैसे तो साल में चार दिन ऐसे होते है। जिनमें दिन और रात एक समान, साल के छोटे बड़े दिन कहलाते है। ऐसा ही एक दिन इस महीने में भी पड़ रहा है। जोकि साल का सबसे छोटा दिन कहलाएगा। 21 दिसम्बर यानि कि आज साल का सबसे छोटा दिन है। इस खगोलीय घटना को Winter solstice कहा जाता है। सबसे पहले तो समझते हैं कि सॉल्सटिस क्या है. ये एक लैटिन शब्द है, जिसका अर्थ है सूरज का स्थिर हो जाना. धरती अपने अक्ष पर घूमते हुए सूरज की ओर दिशा बदलती है. ऐसे में धरती का जो हिस्सा सूरज के संपर्क में आता है, उसे सॉल्सटिस शब्द से जोड़ दिया जाता है.
