Atop DRDO scientist said that the newly-produced ATAGS howitzer is the "best gun in the world" with the capability to strike targets at the longest range of 48 kilometers. Interacting with ANI during the field trials of the ATAGS, project director and senior Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientist Shailendra V Gade said that the indigenous gun can meet Indian Army’s full requirement of 1800 artillery guns systems and there was no need for imports in this field.

भारत का चीन और पाकिस्तान दोनों ही देशों के साथ तनाव चरम पर है. दोनों ही देशों के सामने भारतीय सेना डटकर खड़ी है. भारत के सामने कभी भी टू फ्रंट पर वॉर की नौबत आ सकती है. ऐसा में भारतीय सेना अपनी तैयारी क पुख्ता करने में जुटी हुई है. जिसके लिए आवश्यक है, आधूनिक से आधूनिक आर्टलरी गन्स की. खासकर LAC और LoC दोनों ही विशाल पहाड़ी इलाका है, जहां बड़ी तादाद में ऐसे आर्टिलरी की आवश्यकता है जो हल्का भी हो और जिसकी मारक क्षमता भी बेहतर हो. भारतीय सेना ने इस कमी को पूरा करने के लिए अमेरिका से कुछ होवित्जर तोपें खरीदी थी.
