Goa Liberation Day is observed on December 19 every year by people across the country to mark the day when the Indian Armed Forces liberated Goa from the Portuguese in 1961. The Portuguese refused to give up their hold on the region for several years post India's independence from the British rule, despite an array of talks and military interventions.

भारतीय सेना ने गोवा में आजादी के लिए चलाए गए अभियान को ऑपरेशन विजय कोडनेम दिया था. इस अभियान में सेनाओं ने हवा, समंदर और जमीन के रास्‍ते 36 घंटे तक लगातार हमले किए. उस लड़ाई में 22 भारतीयों और 30 पुर्तगालियों ने अपनी जान गंवाई थी. और तब कहीं जाकर 461 साल बाद गोवा को पुर्तगाली कब्‍जे से आजादी मिल सकी. इस अभियान के दौरान सेना ने गोवा के साथ दमन और दीव को भी आजाद करा लिया.
