HBO's 'Lovecraft Country' is nominated for an Emmy for best drama series. Here's how the show's Shoggoths are created.

HBO's "Lovecraft Country" introduced many terrifying monsters during its first season, none scarier than the shoggoth monsters. To bring the shoggoths to life, the team at Framestore, led by VFX supervisor Grant Walker, turned the monsters into walking weapons. They gave them thousands of teeth, sharklike eyeballs, and blades on their arms and tails. But before the CGI monsters were placed in the scenes, stand-in performers pretended to be them, some carrying a prosthetic shoggoth head, others pretending to attack the other actors. It helped create better — and scarier — visual effects.
