Globally recognised male K-pop stars including members of the boy band BTS will be allowed to defer their military service after a decision reached in South Korea’s National Assembly. On December 1, 2020, lawmakers amended the nation’s compulsory military service law to grant deferrals to selected performers in the same way that top athletes are sometimes allowed to delay or shorten their conscriptions.
