U.S. President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled the figures who will lead his foreign policy team.
He has picked his close aide Antony Blinken as Secretary of State,... and Jake Sullivan as National Security Advisor.
Our Yoon Jung-min tells us what could his choices mean for the Korean Peninsula.
Joe Biden's transition team says Antony Blinken, who is nominated to serve as Secretary of State, has held top foreign affairs posts,... both in previous administrations and on Capitol Hill.
From 2015 to 2017, Blinken served as Deputy Secretary of State under the Obama administration,... during which he was involved in the rebalance to Asia.
He has also advised Biden on foreign policy since 2002.
When he served as National Security Advisor to then-Vice President Biden under Obama, Blinken was involved in the Iran nuclear deal.
And he wrote in the New York Times in 2018 that the Iran deal is the best model for a nuclear deal with Pyeongyang.
Blinken is also seen as a hawk on North Korea.
"Tony Blinken's approach in general is pretty much principled and based upon traditional way of U.S. foreign policies, which means that in dealing with North Korea, I think he will go back to sanctions to deal with North Korea and, based upon sanctions, try to bring North Korea into a table."
Biden has also picked his current senior policy advisor Jake Sullivan as National Security Advisor.
The 43-year-old will be one of the youngest to take the post.
He previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
During his years in government, Sullivan played a key role in the Iran deal,... and the Asia-Pacific rebalance strategy.
Though he may be less hawkish than Blinken on North Korea, he is also likely to maintain "principled diplomacy".
"Jake Sullivan can be more flexible than Tony Blinken about that, but in principle, he aims at a clear verification and he also wants to put a snapback approach."
As for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, the Biden transition team said veteran diplomat, Linda Thomas-Greenfield will take the job.
Former state secretary John Kerry is expected to serve as Special Presidential Envoy for Climate.
Lawyer Alejandro Mayorkas will be nominated to head the Department of Homeland Security,... and former Deputy Director of the CIA, Avril Haines is to serve as Director of National Intelligence.
Meanwhile, former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen has been chosen as Treasury secretary,... which would make her the first woman to lead the department.
