Meghan Markle isn’t Hollywood’s first princess – Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, Wallis Simpson and 7 more Americans who married into royalty

Grace Kelly is best known for starring in High Society alongside Frank Sinatra, and in Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief, but she also married Prince Rainier of Monaco – which other American stars married princes?

Grace Kelly
Arguably the most well-known of American princesses, Grace Kelly was at the height of her acting career when she met Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1955, during filming for To Catch a Thief on the French Riviera.

Born Grace Patricia Kelly on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the actress made her Hollywood debut in 1951 in Fourteen Hours but she became a star after appearing in High Noon alongside Gary Cooper.

She was nominated for a best-supporting actress Oscar in 1953 for Mogambo and won best actress the following year for The Country Girl. Her most famous films were the string of Alfred’s Hitchcock’s suspense classics Dial M for Murder, Rear Window (both 1854) and finally To Catch a Thief.

Kelly married her prince in 1956 and never went back to her acting career. Princess Grace and Prince Rainier had three children, Caroline, Albert and Stephanie. She was a popular princess which helped to revitalise the principality to the hotspot it is today. Princess Grace died in September 1982 suffering a stroke during a drive home.

Fun fact: She was already engaged to the prince when she filmed her final film High Society alongside Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. She wore her actual engagement ring – a 10.5-carat, emerald-cut diamond ring – on screen as her character Tracy Lord’s engagement ring.
