The spread of Covid-19 has been much more rapid and intense in the U.S. and across Europe prompting some European nations to impose new lockdowns.
Meanwhile, the International Olympics Committee head, Thomas Bach, in Tokyo, says he is "very confident" that spectators will be able to attend the Tokyo Olympic Games next summer.
This speaking to reporters after meeting with Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga today.
Choi Jeong-yoon has details.
The president of the International Olympic Committee held talks on Monday with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, and they reaffirmed their determination for the Olympic Games to go ahead next summer.
The Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to kick off next year on July 23rd.
The IOC Chief expressed confidence that spectators will be able to enter the Olympic venues and that they can be assured of a safe environment.
"So in order to protect the Japanese people and out of respect for the Japanese people, the IOC will undertake great effort so that as many (people) as possible - Olympic participants and visitors will arrive here vaccinated if by then a vaccine is available."
Both sides also agreed to make their best efforts to make the next Olympics a symbol of solidarity and the unity of humanity.
"We are determined to hold the Tokyo Games next summer as proof that humanity has defeated the virus. We will have a "Recovery Olympics and Paralympics"... to show that Japan has been recovering from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami..."
However, outbreaks are spiraling out of control in some countries. Japan itself last week logged a new record daily total of more than 17-hundred cases, surpassing the previous peak in early August.
The U.S. is also seeing new daily highs, reporting more than one million cases in just six days.
It now accounts for one fifth of all COVID-19 infections worldwide.
In Europe, the route of transmission is uncertain in 70 to 90 percent of new cases.
Germany is strongly advising people to stay home, while Austria has announced a full lockdown... set to take effect from Tuesday local time.
For three weeks, people will only be allowed to leave home for reasons related to health and work. The government said the aim is to first reopen shops and schools and gradually return to normal.
