Minnesota Vikings Pay
Tribute to George Floyd.
The Minnesota Vikings stood in solidarity with the
social justice movement ahead of their season-opening
game on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.
The team first payed tribute to George Floyd by playing
a video in his honor. His family was in attendance.
Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, sparking months of protests across the country. .
It's absolutely tragic and senseless
he was killed, and we want our community
to change in a positive manner after
such a horrific act. , Andrew Miller, Vikings' Chief Operating Officer, via ‘Complex’.
The Vikings also chose to silence their
Gjallarhorn. It marks the first time they’ve done
so since it became a pre-game tradition. .
In a post to Twitter, the team said
the Gjallarhorn was silenced in
honor of Floyd and “others who no
longer have a voice due to racism.”.
The Packers showed their support by staying
in their locker room during the playing of the
National Anthem and "Lift Every Voice and Sing.”.
We decided as a team to remain in the locker room … so as to not distract from our message that we stand united for social justice and racial inequality, Mark Murphy, Green Bay Packers CEO, via 'Complex'
