According to the Associated Press, Ford died Thursday night at his home in Long Island.
The New York Yankees made
the announcement on Friday.
Ford made his major league debut in 1950 and spent his whole career, 16 seasons, with the Yankees.
In the 1950s, he was dubbed "Chairman of the Board" by Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Jim Murray.
who likened rooting for the Yankees to rooting for General Motors or U.S. Steel at the time.
He led the Yankees to win six World Series titles and 11 American League pennants.
His career record was 236-106.
Ford was inducted into the Hall of Fame
with Mickey Mantle in 1974. .
His number, 16, was retired the same year
