Modi wrote that he was thinking of giving up his Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts on March 8. PM Modi did not mention the reason behind the tweet. Twitter was soon flooded with many people speculating the reason behind the unexpected tweet. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was one of the first to comment. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said the abrupt announcement would have led many people to speculate if this is the first step towards banning social media in the country. PM Narendra Modi is one of the most followed world leaders on social media with 53.3 million followers on Twitter. Modi has 44 million followers on Facebook, 5.2 million on Instagram and 4.5 million on YouTube.
