Captain Amarinder Singh of the Congress Party turns a year older on March 11, 2020. The current chief minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh was born in the year 1942. Singh is the head of the royal family of the erstwhile state of Patiala. He previously served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. On March 11, 2017 the congress party won the state assembly elections under his leadership. He joined the Indian army in June 1963 after graduating from the National Defence Academy & Indian Military Academy. Singh was inducted into the Congress party by Rajiv Gandhi. Singh was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980. In 1984, he resigned from Parliament and from Congress as a protest against the Army action during Operation Blue Star. He then joined the Shiromani Akali Dal. In 1992, Singh broke ties with the Akali Dal and formed Shiromani Akali Dal (Panthic) which later merged with the Congress in 1998
