The International Space Station on November 2, 2020, marked 20 years of continuous human habitation on board the lab that has been in low Earth orbit since 1998. The first crew, which included US astronaut Bill Shepherd and cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko, lifted off from Kazakhstan on October 31, 2000, and arrived at the station two days later.
